In the opening scene Motoko Kusanagi makes a statement while getting ready for a battle, "If you over specialize it's slow death...". It's subtle quotes and hidden themes that ultimately will leave you thinking for hours afterwards. And you can't deny the influence Ghost in the Shell had on the 1999 Matrix film. I consider it a masterpiece of anime film, the Arise prequel series is pretty good as well.
